Went in for a simple safety check into Lex Brodie's yesterday. It's a simple and quick service that is required by the state of Hawaii to renew a vehicles registration. We had pulled up the service lane and was greeted by a person who asked me 'how may I help you?'. I said just need a safety check. Automatically he said I needed a new tire as he approached the car from one side. I obviously know for a fact that I still have a good amount of tread on my tires. He only inspected one tire and automatically stated that he will not pass my car if I don't change all 4 of my tires because it is an all wheel drive. This statement is ridiculous, as a service center who is required and certified by state, to inspect these vehicles in order to renew the registration, tries to upsell a service and a product that is not even necessary. Are you guys telling me that if i were to get a flat tire that needs to be replaced and the rest of my tires are fine, I need to change all fours? Ridiculous! I hope the state of Hawaii takes a look at these types of businesses and does not take advantage of simple services needed by consumers. I had actually gone to my car dealer service center and got the safety check completed and passed without any upselling or problems with my vehicle.

Please note, on AWD vehicles, their auto manufacture is very clear that on their AWD vehicles, if one tire goes bad, and the tires are worn more then 2/32nds from the new tires tread depth, then all 4 tires need to be replaced to avoid the tire tread depth differences throwing off the AWD system where it thinks the vehicle is constantly loosing tracking causing the system to constantly work to control loss of traction, which is only designed to happen for the moments those events happen. One auto brand that is notorious for this guideline are Subarus. Many AWD vehicle brands will allow 2 to be changed at a time, while several other state all 4 should be replaced. If you’re able, please take a photo of the tire replacement guidelines from your owner’s manual. Also please send us the paid invoice from the shop who did your safety check. When we can review these photos and additional informations, we will be able to properly address your concerns. Please note, the state safety check guidelines can be have grey areas where it’s up to the inspector to make the call to whether the tire meets the minimum requirement to pass.
